there you have it!

My puffle shared my disappointment. He just sat by my side and slept.

I heard a knock at the door. Debating on whether to answer it or scream “Go away!” My friend Bobjoehighland barged in.

“Hi Free,” he murmured.

“Hey Highland,” I replied glumly.

“What’s wrong?”

But then, he realized. “Snow,” he whispered.

I nodded.

Highland was in the CPA, to my dismay. He was transferred to Club Penguin, and I insisted that I’d come with him. He said it was too dangerous, but still, I insisted even more firmly.

“Battle’s tomorrow, eh?” I asked, trying to help Highland feel better.

“Yes, and I’m so pumped!” He replied, jumping with excitement.

“Did you take your medicine this morning?”

Highland blushed. “No, but c’mon! I want to have a sugar rush every once in a while.”

“Let’s get back on topic. Where were we? Oh yeah, battle.”

“Well, what?”

“What can I do?”

“Watch.”

“How does that help?”

“Don’t know. I have to go to prepare.”

“Ok, later.”

“Later.”

I sighed. Highland was only obsessed with war. I felt zapped out of his life. He only hung with his war buddies, and rarely came to see me anymore.

What about a nap to help straighten things out, I thought. I nodded and shut my eyes. I slowly drifted between the boundaries of sleep and awake until sleep decided to take me in for the night.

The next morning, i woke in a panic. “Wow! That was one long nap! I must’ve been real tired!” I exclaimed. “I have to go to the battlefield! The soldiers are waiting!”

I had secretly volunteered as a medic during the war. (Don’t tell!)

I opened my igloo door and walked into the crisp, cool, fresh air. I slowly walked to the dojo, head down, trying to shield the cold.

I opened the door of the dojo, the battlefield of the DSRA. The soldiers were just lining up, preparing to battle, to be free or be enslaved.

The navy blue medical tents of the CPA were to my right, the lime green DSRA tents to my left. The group of volunteers who were earlier than punctual motioned to me, wanting me to come.

“Ready?” One volunteer asked. I recognized her as Breakaway, friend of the leader, Warrioryo.

“As ever.”

Breakaway noticed my nervousness. “He’ll be fine,” she said. “Highland’s a good soldier.”

I nodded.

The war began and DSRA shot first, which got the CPA going. Back and forth the armies traded shots and plenty got injured, but Highland dodged well and seemed to be fine. Then I noticed it.

There was a gash from his left shoulder to his right hip. He seemed reluctant, but he ran to the medic tent.

“You okay?” I asked, plenty worried.

“Hopefully.”

I led him to a cot, where I bandaged him and gave him his lunch: potatoes and water. He ate ravenously, but even after that, he was getting weaker due to blood loss.

I walked out to serve the others of the wounded’s lunch. When I was in the third camp, Breakaway stopped me.

“He isn’t good,” she whispered. “He’s holding out fine, but he’s rapidly losing blood and he might, he might. It’s just so hard to believe, free.  He’s always held out fine until now.”

I really was crushed. “I’ll stay with him.”

She nodded.

I walked into Highland’s tent and I did not like what I saw: Highlandbob was pale and looked in pain. He managed a smile.

“Hi,” he whispered softly, and I realized that it was painful for him to talk.

“Hi,” I managed to reply, overcoming the lump in my throat.

“Don’t have much time, eh? I wish I could’ve hung with you more. But my spirit will be at peace as long as you remember me.”

At that moment, the General of the CPA walked in. He looked surprised, but firmly said, “Highland, you fought well, led us to many victories. Remember that.”

Highland nodded and held my hand, which I grasped tightly. “Bye Free, he said. He smiled and closed his eyes. And he was still.

I was distraught. Didn’t know whether I should laugh or cry. I looked out the window and saw to my dismay: snow. That was Highlands dream. I sobbed softly in my hands.
